Vegan Disneyland

Disneyland is known as the happiest place on earth, and on a recent family trip, I was determined to discover how happy it could be for vegans. Although I've traveled to Disneyland as a vegetarian several times in the past, this would be my first time as a vegan. In this blog I'll cover the vegan food options at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, and will mention a few select vegan food options at the Disneyland Resort Hotels and Downtown Disney.
Menu items and ingredients do change, so please notify servers of your dietary retractions when ordering. It is also a good idea to verify that items are vegan with the chef, as I've come across multiple servers and employees who provided inaccurate information saying something was vegan when it was not, or saying it wasn't vegan when it was.
Researching Vegan Food Options at the Disneyland Resort
I've been to Disneyland multiple times since going vegan, and Disney has improved their vegan friendly options over the years. When I originally wrote this several years ago in June 2013, the information available was very limited and inconsistent. I've also seen my work copied on multiple websites since that time. To be prepared, I did my research ahead of time. I've also updated this blog since my original post based on comments and several follow up trips to Disneyland to double check anything that was challenged.
The Disneyland Dining official website allows you to filter by restaurants that offer vegetarian options, but not vegan. There are sample menus for some, but not all, dining establishments, and the menus are not explicit on what is or isn't vegetarian. There is a section on the website about Food Allergies and Special Dietary Needs, that recommends notifying a Cast Member of your dietary needs when making reservations for full service restaurants. I sent guest services an email asking if they had a list of vegan food options, and they replied saying that they don't.
I have not had a lot of success when requesting to see ingredient lists. When ingredient lists are not available, which is the case most of the time, the cast member can check with the chef to see if vegetarian items contain egg or dairy.
My original Vegan Disneyland post was based on what I felt was sufficient research and asking employees what items were vegan or could be made vegan. In my follow up trip to Disneyland I asked a lot more questions based on the blog comments. I ask employees if an item is vegan, or if it could be made vegan by leaving off certain items. If they say yes, I ask them to verify with the chef that the item does not contain dairy or egg. I've also had employees tell me that certain items were vegetarian, but not vegan, so I ask them to check with the chef. What I've found is that employees are not experts in what is vegan or not, so it's best to double check with the chef. I've updated my post with additional details around any items that had comments saying that they found that a particular item wasn't vegan.
Multiple people have commented on having issues with getting vegan pancakes/waffles at the locations where I have indicated they are available, but others have had no problem. This seems to be an issue with employees not having the correct information. The vegan pancakes/waffles are made to order with Bob's Red Mill Gluten-Free Pancake and Waffle Mix, and they are mixed with water, instead of the milk and eggs called for in the directions.
I was able to find unofficial restaurant menus for Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, the Disneyland Resort Hotels, and Downtown Disney at AllEars.net. These were helpful in narrowing down what might be vegan or could possibly be made vegan.
I performed multiple Google searches and found a handful of blogs about vegan options at Disneyland, but there was conflicting information amongst blogs, and and some of the blog comments noted that the blogger had posted incorrect information. Many vegan blogs report that the veggie burgers at the parks are vegan, which I have confirmed though Disney that the veggie patties contain egg white, and are not vegan. The only confirmed vegan burger is the Chef's Vegan Burger at the Carnation Cafe in Disneyland Park. Multiple blogs also reported that the Veggie Tater Bake at Flo's V-8 Cafe could be made made vegan by requesting no cheese, which is incorrect, the potatoes and soy crumbles contain dairy and are baked in, so this dish cannot be made vegan. Several blogs also warned against the mexican rice and refried beans at the parks because these items are often made with chicken stock or lard. I have confirmed that both the mexican rice and refried beans at the parks are vegan. I did find some consistent information and did take note of those items.
A few blogs said that you could get a list of Vegan/Vegetarian Options at Disneyland City Hall, as well as Gluten Free and Kosher lists. I personally went into Disneyland City Hall and they only have a Kosher food list.
Some vegans avoid refined sugar, as sugar from sugar cane may be refined and filtered using bone char. At home, I use organic sugar, which doesn't use bone char in processing, and purchase organic products whenever possible. When traveling or eating out, I adhere to Peta's position of 99.9% vegan and don't stress about potential trace amounts of potential animal ingredients coming into contact with otherwise vegan food.
Armed with as much information as I could gather ahead of time, I set off to discover and evaluate the Disneyland vegan options. All of our meals during the trip were on the Disneyland Resort property, either in the Disneyland Park, at Disney California Adventure Park, at Downtown Disney, or at one of the 3 Disneyland Resort Hotels.

Disneyland Accomidations
I purposefully booked the trip during a low crowd time (April 28th to May 3rd), and found the best flight and hotel deals on Orbitz.com. Disney had a spring promotion running for 20% off a stay of 2 nights or more, and Orbitz was offering an additional 15% off. After I booked my flight with Orbitz, I was pleasantly surprised to get a special 20% off hotel discount (instead of the 15% off) if I booked a hotel within the next 24 hours. Needless to say, I was able to book the Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel at an unbelievable discount. The Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel has a beach theme, and the rooms have been recently updated. The Disney Grand Californian Hotel and the Disneyland Hotel are the other two Disneyland Resort Hotels. Opening its doors in 2001, the Disney Grand Californian is the newest of the hotels. It has a luxurious craftsman theme, and is the highest priced of the three hotels. The Disneyland Hotel opened in 1955, and is the oldest hotel. The hotel went through a major renovation, which was completed in 2012. The rooms are beautiful with Sleeping Beauty Castle headboards that light up and play music. It is priced between the Disney Grand Californian Hotel and the Disney Paradise Pier Hotel. One of the biggest advantages of staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel is that hotel guests get early entry into the parks one hour before opening to the general public everyday of their stay with a valid park ticket (Early Entry to Disneyland Park on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and Early Entry into Disney California Adventure on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays). Disneyland Resort Hotel guest also get to use the exclusive private Disney California Adventure entrance through the Disney Grand Californian Hotel. We have stayed at the Disneyland Hotel, the Disney Paradise Pier Hotel, and the Hilton Anaheim which is a "Good Neighbor Hotel." I really prefer to stay at a Disneyland Resort Hotel because you are immersed in the Disney experience for your entire vacation. I like that the Disneyland Resort Hotels are all an easy walk to the parks, while most other area hotels are not a quick walk, so you need to ride Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART), especially if you are traveling with young children.
